Fired For Using The "Like" Button

Six workers in Virginia were fired from their jobs because they liked a post on Facebook. Their boss, Sheriff B.J. Roberts fired them because they liked the Facebook page of Jim Adams, who was running against Roberts for the position of sheriff. The workers brought the case to court because they believe that being fired for liking a page is against the first amendment, the freedom of speech. The defendants state that it is harmless to like a page and that they were just supporting someone they knew. Judge Raymond A. Jackson tells it differently, he states that by liking a page you are showing that you like whatever that means. The ruling will most likely be appealed and could be taken to Supreme Court. Do you think that this case should be taken to the supreme court or that it should stand as is? I believe that the author of this article was trying to get out that you should be careful of what you put out on sites like Facebook, Twitter and other social networks because once you do put something it is permanent.

  1. I really like how you explained the situation that the workers from Virginia were going through. Personally, I feel that it is silly to go to court for liking something on Facebook, but other people out there feel differently. What do you think would happen if this case went to the Supreme Court and it became a law that you can't post anything on Facebook that is work related? Only time will tell what will happen to the workers from Virginia. Really nice response, I liked the different perspectives you put in for example you put Judge Raymond A.'s perspective in and then you had the defendants perspective as well.
    Nice response.

  2. That was great! The second I read the title, I was interested. You didn't just state the obvious and retype what you read in the magazine. I liked how you asked questions to further the readers thoughts and understanding of what you had to say. I think you did awesome!

  3. This is really good Ben! It's kinda crazy how people can be fireed from their job just for liking something on Facebook. I liked how you told us what you interpreted after reading the artcle, it was a good way to sum up your paragraph. You told us all of the good information we needed. Good job!
